Soldiers get horse training before deployment

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) - Soldiers who will deploy to Afghanistan are getting some essential training before they go, but it doesn't involve weapons.

Instead, about 60 soldiers and airmen are learning to ride horses so they can better navigate the mountainous terrain in Afghanistan's Panjshir Province.

The Republic newspaper in Columbus reports the 189th Infantry Brigade at Atterbury is paying for the lessons, which are being taught by three instructors.

The training is divided into three groups. Once all 60 soldiers are trained, 20 will go on a Sept. 27 trail ride designed to simulate a mission.
