Cincinnati City Council passes texting while driving ban

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Cincinnati City Council passed an ordinance Thursday prohibiting texting while driving in the city of Cincinnati.

It passed with an 8-1 vote, with Councilmember Chris Monzel voting against it.

The ban will go into effect in 30 days. The fine will be $100 if caught.

A motion passed Wednesday in the Public Safety Committee meeting.

According to the ordinance, the new law would prohibit "Sending, Reading or Writing a Text Message or Accessing the Internet While Driving."

City officials say the move is intended to punish anybody, but rather intended to educate the public and make them aware that driving is the most important activity you can do when you're behind that wheel, especially with the motor running.
