HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -- Hamilton manufacturing company, Thompson Metals and Tubing has just hired three new workers for the first time in three years.
The manufacturing company does welding, machining and laser cutting --making parts for other companies. Owner Don Ryan says they were hit hard over the past couple of years going from 75 employees to just 35, but recently thing are looking up.
"What we've seen recently though, there's been a small spike in activity, we were able to bring a couple people back and we've since hired three new welders this past week," Ryan said.
They were able to hire those workers, because one of their previous customers gave them more work.
"Now we've seen this spike in activity, we're just not sure though if it's something that's permanent, but we took a chance and we've hired some people, so we're willing to see what's going to happen," Ryan said.
The new hires come just as unemployment numbers in Hamilton show a steady decrease from 11 . 4 percent in July to 10.6 percent in August.
"We're still very cautious," Ryan said.
Ryan is careful not take the small increase as an overall indicator for the future.
"We have a small spike in our business, but the recession in itself certainly is not over, we're all hoping for the best but we also have to deal with reality," Ryan said.
Based on projected orders, the company hopes to hire even more machinists and welders in the coming weeks.
