The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds held on to pull out a 38-31 home victory over the Covington Catholic Colonels, marking only the third time in their last 25 games in the series they've managed to win.

Early on it appeared as if the game was going to be a route as NewCath (5-1) raced out to a 24-10 first-half lead. However, once again the Thoroughbreds had problems finishing and nearly allowed the Colonels to comeback as they nearly let a 38-17 lead slip away. If NCC can learn to put four quarters together they are going to be a very tough out in Class 2A this year in the state of Kentucky.

Breds' quarterback Brady Hightchew rushed for 95 yards and two scores on 23 carries and completed 9-of-13 passes for 175 yards a touchdown to lead the way. Senior running back Chris Kelly loomed large in the victory, adding 150 yards and two touchdowns of his own 28 carries.

CovCath (3-3) got two touchdowns and 105 yards from junior running back Gabe Gray and senior running back Alex Slabaugh added a 30-yard scoring run in the loss.

NCC takes on Newport next Friday night while CovCath takes a week off before facing Scott on October 8.
