TAYLORSVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An LMPD officer is dead after he was struck while riding his bike in Spencer County.

Officials in Spencer County say the Louisville officer was riding his bicycle westbound on Kentucky 248 near Taylorsville Lane just before 10 a.m. when he was struck by a white Hyundai SUV.

The officer - 40-year-old Paul Pegram of Taylorsville, KY - was flown to the University of Louisville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He was an 8-year veteran of the force and assigned to the 5th division. He was not wearing a helmet.

LMPD officials say they were able to immediately determine that the driver Daryl M. Fogle,37 of Mt. Eden, KY, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Officials still do not know why the driver did not see the officer or was not able to avoid hitting him.

Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson and LMPD Chief Robert White immediately rallied together and held a press conference at noon Thursday.

"It didn't appear to be an alcohol-related incident," White said. "The officer was obviously riding his bike. The motorist was identified and the investigation is pending."

White told reporters that the officer was stationary when he was struck.

"What they're telling me in Spencer County is that it was a pretty open road with clear visibility," Abramson said. "We weren't talking about a winding road with some car coming around the corner. We're really trying to get the facts, but right now it's the tragedy of losing an officer in what looks like a terrible, terrible accident."

We'll bring you the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
