Man dies after home invasion in Evanston

EVANSTON, OH (FOX19) - Police are investigating a home invasion in Evanston in which one man was killed and another injured.

According to police, three people broke into a home in the 1800 block of Hewitt Avenue Tuesday afternoon and shot two men inside the residence.

David Williams, 37, was taken to University Hospital where he died of gunshot injuries.  The second shooting victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries on the scene.

Geneen Drake lives across the street where the incident occurred. She told FOX19 the girlfriend of one of the victim's called her minutes after shots rang out.

"I couldn't believe it because I'm right here and I didn't hear anything," said Drake. "So I'm like no that didn't happen. I walk out there door and there's police everywhere. I was shocked. Nothing has happened this close. Like I said, I was born and raised here."

Officers said three men busted through the front door, demanded property, and then fired shots. There was a third person inside the house at the time of the invasion.

"The third {victim} escaped out the back door," said Sgt. Ron Childress. "We're not sure where he is. And whether or not he was injured at all. So right now he's basically just a witness that we're trying to get a hold of."

Police are also searching for the three people who broke into the house.

Neighbors said the owner of the house, Ronnell Brown, also known as "L," kept to himself. A neighbor said he bred dogs worth between $1,100 and $3,000 a piece. After the shooting, the SPCA was called to the scene to take two dogs out of the house.

"I've never seen any trouble from him," said Paul Marksberry, a neighbor. "Just on New Year's Eve I think he shoots a gun in the air."

No word yet on what, if anything, the suspects were able to steal from the house.

Officers said the victims and witnesses aren't cooperating. Right now, police said they don't believe the victims know the gunmen.
