CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) – Greater Cincinnati Safe Kids Coalition Members and volunteers from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Tri-Health Think First Program, Cincinnati Metro, Fed Ex, Hamilton County Safe Communities, Parent and Community Volunteers, Local Fire and Police Departments, will teach children pedestrian safety and conduct a safety assessment of the streets surrounding Phoenix Community Learning Center and Lincoln Heights Elementary. This event is part of International Walk Your Child to School Day, an international effort promoting pedestrian safety.

International Walk Your Child to School Day is taking place on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. Events will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Phoenix Community Learning Center, located at 3595 Washington Avenue, as well as at Lincoln Heights Elementary, located at 1300 Adams Street.

Pedestrian injury is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 5 to 14. Motor vehicle crashes account for approximately 80 percent of all childhood pedestrian deaths, with children ages 5 to 9 at highest risk.

Children are especially vulnerable to pedestrian death because they face traffic threats that exceed their cognitive, developmental, behavioral, physical and sensory abilities. Speed also plays a critical role in pedestrian injury. The majority of motor vehicles in school zones exceed the speed limit. The prevalence of speeding around schools, where safety measures exist, suggests that drivers are even more neglectful in residential areas.

The Greater Cincinnati Safe Kids Coalition is a community-based grassroots initiative focused on the prevention of unintentional childhood injuries through public education, community programming, safety product distribution, legislative action, media outreach, local injury data collection and local program evaluation.
