Turpin (7-0, 1-0) roared out to a 20-0 halftime lead. The Spartans built the margin to 27-0 with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter on to see Wilmington (5-2, 1-1) come storming back. The ‘Cane scored three touchdowns in a 3:45 span to pull within seven with two minutes left but they fell just short.
Quarterback Eric Martin ran for two scores and threw another to sophomore Ryan Millikin. All that damage was done in the game's first 15 minutes. For Martin it was his 22nd touchdown toss to just one interception on the year and it was Millikin's first time to the end zone as a varsity player.
Despite the fourth quarter offensive outburst by Wilmington the Spartans defense was still the difference in the outcome. Turpin held the ‘Cane to 3-11 on third down conversions, 72 yards rushing on 28 carries and just for completions.
Turpin is at home again next week facing Walnut Hills (3-4, 0-2). Wilmington hosts Little Miami (3-4, 0-1).
