WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - A man wanted after what at first appeared to be a kidnapping is now in the Butler County jail on a different charge, from a case that happened before the school incident.
Police were looking for Rob Rethamel after he picked up a 12-year-old girl at a school in West Chester last week.
He was pulled over around 5 a.m. Saturday in the area of Canal Way and Port Union Road in West Chester. He was taken to the Butler County Jail.
He is charged with rape, but West Chester police say that case has nothing to do with the school visit. They wouldn't say anything about the victim in that case or whether they were investigating that case before the incident at the school. He is not listed as being charged with anything related to picking up the girl, but police say that is still being investigated.
Rethamel was wanted after showing up at Lakota Ridge Junior High and picking up a 12-year-old girl. That led to a massive search that ended a couple hours later after the girl was dropped off at the same school.
At first this event was described as a kidnapping, but after the girl was dropped off unharmed and Rethamel was reported to be the girl's mother's boyfriend's brother, that description was changed, while police still tried to find and question Rethamel.
Rethamel and the girl had recently become friends on Facebook, according to Rethamel's profile. Police said Rethamel has a few traffic violations on his record.
