COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A defense attorney says a northern Kentucky psychiatrist will plead guilty in an attack in which a patient was stabbed with a two-foot sword.
Dr. Douglas Rank is charged with attempted murder, but lawyer Robert Gettys said during a pretrial conference in Covington on Monday that his client would enter a plea to first-degree assault.
Rank's trial is scheduled to begin next week.
The 52-year-old Rank would have to serve 85 percent of any sentence. Both attempted murder and first-degree assault carry sentences of 10 years to 15 years in prison.
Court records show Misty Luke of Covington was stabbed in the chest and abdomen on Feb. 21 in an apartment above Rank's office.
Rank's medical license was suspended after the attack.
