COVINGTON, KY - Matthew Kaylor is sentenced to nine years behind bars for his part in a fight that led to the death of Patrick McGrath.
He pleaded guilty last month. His attorney says more than anything Kaylor wants to say he's sorry for what happened, and that he's not a rotten person.
During the sentencing hearing, Kaylor was unable to read a prepared statement to Norma Oliver, the mother of Patrick McGrath, due to being so upset. Instead, his attorney read the statement, which said:
"I have three kids of my own, I know how you feel, my kids mean the world to me and I would do anything in this world to keep them safe. I got a 3 year old and a set of twins that are 10 months old and they are all boys. If anybody was to hurt them I would go crazy."
Oliver says that Kaylor's actions were stupid and senseless, she can say she forgives Kaylor. However, the words lack any true meaning.
According to police Kaylor and McGrath had a fight at Dickman's in Fort Wright last March.
Kaylor punched McGrath outside the bar, McGrath hit the pavement.
He later died of a brain injury.
