19 things to never buy new

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Typically when buying something, most people get it brand new.

But if you want the best value, you could check out secondhand options. Many used goods still have plenty of life left in them and they're usually resold at a fraction of the retail price.

Many things can be new for you, like DVDs, CDs, video games, books, toys, craft supplies, holiday items and home decor.

Then there are the clothes, whether it's shirts, pants, maternity wear or kids outfits, someone else's closet cast off is your gain.

"It goes through a sorting process, you get three out of 100 items that we sort and use in our stores," said Maj. Nancy Beauchamp at the Salvation Army thrift store in Norwood.

Furniture is another item. Really solid pieces will last long after they're resold.

Many have discovered the advantage to buying a used car. The pre-owned vehicle can save you money on the initial cost and insurance.

In that same category, motorized fun rides like boats, campers and jet skis can be cheaper than new if they are still in good condition.

And how about your family pet? Buying a kitten from a breeder or pet store can be expensive. You can save a life and cash by getting one at your local animal shelter.

"You'll get spayed, neuter, microchips get $400 worth of services for in our case 80 bucks," said Dan Evans with the Kenton County Animal Shelter.

Buying a brand new instrument is rarely a good idea, especially if the musician is a beginner. Rusty Thompson has plenty of used guitars as proof.

"The family that got his went through lessons and everything," said Thompson. "And the child said it's not me, so they got this guitar and no one plays so what to do with it."

New, it was $400 with the case. Used, it's selling for $150.

Other things to make the don't buy new list include:

  • Hand tools
  • Gardening supplies
  • Sports equipment
  • Refurbished consumer electronics

Remember when you buy secondhand, typically all sales are final. So you'll have to check over the item before you make your purchase.'
