Does it work? The Thundershirt

(WECT/FOX19) - If your dog barks when he gets scared, or is anxious or overexcited, a new product promises to help.

But does it work?

The website for Thundershirts makes some pretty big claims.  The company says that by putting on a $36 piece of Velcro-laded fabric, troubled dogs are instantly calmed.

Fear of thunder, loud noises, separation anxiety, leash pulling, even barking, all claim to be remedied by the product. And vet professionals have known about this for a while.

"Constant pressure on the nervous system can help have a calming and soothing effect," said Brook Outten with Porters Neck Veterinary Hospital.

Porters Neck uses and sells the shirt to help keep fearful dogs calm before during and after a host of procedures.

Nikki Bussey knows all to well the pitfalls of a timid dog.

"When she gets scared she tends to burrow in things," Bussey said about her dog, Spunky. "She'll shake, then she starts to pant."

Bussey would try medication to quiet Spunky during a thunderstorm, but by the time the meds kicked in, the storm was over.

So Spunky tried the Thundershirt, and it worked. She's still aware of the noises, but appears to have undergone a psychic change.

"I would buy this," said Bussey.

Thundershirt also has a 4-star rating on Amazon.com.

So for dog owners looking to calm nervous dogs, Thundershirt is no bark and all bite.
