The Simon Kenton Pioneers picked up a huge road playoff win as they defeated the Henry Clay Blue Devils 21-19 on Friday night in Lexington to advance in Class 6A playoffs.

Simon Kenton (10-2) fell down 7-0 early in the game, but scored 21 unanswered points behind the stellar play of quarterback Chad Lawrence and some timely defense. Lawrence completed 10 of his 23 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 18 times for 109 yards.

The Pioneers put 14 second-quarter points on the board as Lawrence connected with Zach Carroll on a 24-yard scoring pass and DJ Rabe for a 21-yard touchdown.

Head coach Jeff Marksberry opted to open the second half with an onside kick and the Pioneers executed and recovered the football. Five plays later Lawrence found Matt Reilly in the end zone from five yards out and just like that Simon Kenton was up 21-7.

Henry Clay (9-3) wouldn't go away though. Running back Dinny Miller would answer the score with a 18-yard touchdown run on the next series, but the Blue Devils missed the point-after-conversion and remained down eight points.

From there both defenses went into lockdown mode until Miller scored again with 10 seconds left in the game on a 2-yard run. Henry Clay went for two in an attempt to send the game to overtime, but the Pioneers' defense came up with the stop as Simon Kenton advanced.

They head to Ryle next week in a state quarterfinal matchup. Simon Kenton lost there earlier this season 38-35.
