Passerby rescues family from house fire

AMELIA, OH (FOX19) - An Amelia family is thanking a mystery man who helped save their family from a house fire.

Fire crews responded to the two-alarm on Sunday morning on W. Main Street.

Investigators say a man driving by spotted smoke coming from the home, so he broke a window to get into the home and woke everyone up. He left shortly after.

There were eight people home at the time, including a newborn baby, and all were sleeping. There were no working fire alarms in the home.

No one knows who the man was but if he hadn't stopped, investigators say this could have been a tragic incident.

"There were no working smoke detectors in the house extremely lucky this would most definitely been a fatal fire," said Chief Stan Biemling with the Union Township Fire Department.

The woman at the home has a message for the mystery Good Samaritan.

"Thanks for saving my family," said Phyllis Booze.

No one was hurt, but home is a total loss. A cause has not been determined.
