Quarterback Matt Staubach ran for two and threw for two touchdowns as the McNicholas Rockets overcame a 14-10 deficit to beat their GCL Central counterparts, the Roger Bacon Spartans, for a second time this season and find a place in the Division III, Region 12 Regional Finals.
McNicholas (10-2) dominated the game by winning the time of possession battle by almost sixteen minutes, forcing four turnovers and holding the Spartans to just 62 yards rushing on 24 carries.
The only thing they didn't stop was the Tanner Sprong-to-Mike Jackson connection that hooked up four times for 72 yards and two touchdowns for Roger Bacon. Sprong finished the night with 229 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-29 passing.
Everyone seemed to come up big for McNick. Rob Rice led all runners with 82 yards and was a force as always on defense. Ryan Haynes had 57 yards rushing, a receiving touchdown and a sack. Matt Norrish had 120 all-purpose yards on five touches and a receiving touchdown.
McNicholas will take on Eaton (12-0) in the Division III Regional Finals next Saturday in what promises to be a hard-hitting defensive struggle.
