One dead; four injured at Gallatin Steel Plant

GHENT, KY (FOX19) - One person is dead and four others are severely injured after an accident at a Gallatin County steel plant.

The accident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. at the Gallatin Steel Plant on the 4800 block of U.S.42 in Ghent. Several workers from Heckett MultiServ, a subcontractor that processes slag for Gallatin Steel, were working on fusing a rim to a tire, when the tire somehow exploded. The explosion killed 48-year-old Robin Kelley.

Kelley had been with Heckett MultiServ since 2006. Heckett MultiServ has been partners with Gallatin Steel for 17 years. They currently have 40 employees at their Gallatin plant.

The accident also sent 51-year-old Jeffrey Huff, 53-year-old Thomas Gale, and 52-year-old Andy Bumgardner to the Carroll County Hospital.

50-year-old David Davanzati was taken to University Hospital by AirCare.

"This is a non-criminal investigation, there are no charges whatsoever expected criminally. It was a tragic accident at this facility," said Officer Michael Webb with Kentucky State Police.

The incident is still under investigation.
