City extends Winter Shelter Emergency

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A Winter Shelter Emergency has been extended for the City of Cincinnati.

The Over-The-Rhine Community Center, located at 1715 Republic Street, will be now open to the public Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. It will be open from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m.

Staff will continue to monitor the weather for further shelter openings throughout the week.

The Center for Disease Control is offering these tips to keep you safe during the winter season:

· Eat well balanced meals with plenty of carbohydrates and avoid alcohol.

· Limit skin exposure to the extreme cold and avoid extended periods of exposure.

· Wear proper clothing such as a hat, scarf, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, mittens and several layers of dry clothing.

· If you suspect a problem with frostbite or hypothermia, you should seek medical care. If your body temperature is below 95 degrees, it is an emergency.

Those interested in making food or clothing donations, or who want to volunteer, should contact Josh Spring of the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless at (513) 421-7803 ext. 13 or (513) 716-7455. The Coalition is in need of blankets this year.
