Highlands Adds Another Title

The Highlands Bluebirds turned in one of their most dominating performances of the season to take down the Christian County Colonels 50-0 in Saturday's Kentucky Class 5A state championship game.

Highlands State ChampionsQuarterback Patrick Towles ran for five first-half touchdowns and the Bluebirds completely shut down the Colonels' offense, forcing six turnovers and limiting them to just 135 total yards of offense, including just 22 first-half yards.

Highlands (14-1) won the toss, but deferred. After forcing a three-and-out the Bluebirds put together a 14-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a Towles 6-yard touchdown run. They missed the kick though and took a 6-0 lead.

Christian County (12-3) went three-and-out again on their second drive and after a 15-yard punt it didn't take long for the Bluebirds to score again. Towles found the end zone for a second time as he went nearly untouched for 24 yards to give the Bluebirds a 12-0 edge at the end of one quarter.

A third straight three-and-out doomed the Colonels and set the stage for a third Towles' touchdown on a 23-yard run would put Highlands up 19-0 and the route was on.

The Bluebirds defense would stifle the Christian County offense all night long. Towles would add two more rushing touchdowns by halftime to set a state finals record with five.

The junior finished the night with 167 yards on 20 carries and completed 4-of-8 passes for 53 yards. Senior Corey Compton provided a night change of pace and tallied 97 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Daniel Gold caught two balls for 46 yards.

Defensively, linebacker Billy Huddleston led the charge with 4.5 tackles and had a pick-six on a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown. Ty Seidl had a pair of interceptions out of the secondary. Carter New added an interception of his own. Ethan Bishop and Brian Gall each recovered a fumble.

The win secures Highlands' fourth straight state championship and 20th overall state title. The Bluebirds will move from 5A to 4A next season.
