Fewer deer taken in 1st wk. of Ohio gun season

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - After a strong start, the opening week of Ohio's annual deer hunt with firearms turned out slower than last year's.

The state Division of Wildlife says in the seven days that ended Sunday hunters with guns took 104,400 white-tailed deer, compared to 114,600 during the same period in 2009.

Division officials had said earlier that the number of kills checked on the first day of the season was up 12.5 percent from last year's opening day.

Tuscarawas County in eastern Ohio had the highest number of deer brought to check stations last week, more than 5,500.

The deer-gun season has been on hiatus since Sunday night but resumes for two more days over the Dec. 18-19 weekend.
