Grave vases stolen across Northern Kentucky

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Police are investigating a series of thefts from Northern Kentucky cemeteries. Hundreds of graves have had vases stolen from them.

"I am really appalled at the whole thing really I am," say Helen Gayner.

Gayner says the marker at her grandparents' grave is one of 15 at Mother of God Cemetery disturbed by thieves. At Helen's grandparents marker, one of two vases was taken. Helen discovered the crime before cemetery caretakers did.

"I don't know who was more upset, my sister or myself. We just looked, well, she said, 'look!' and I looked and well, I'm driving and so I'm pulling up and she's seeing it before I did, and it was really heartbreaking," says Helen.

Forest Lawn, Evergreen, Mother of God and Floral Hills cemeteries have all been hit.

Police say hundreds of bronze vases have been ripped right off the markers.

Floral Hills reported a theft of more than 100 vases to Taylor Mill police Tuesday morning.

"They're probably 4 to 5 hundred dollars a piece, so you know, that's several thousands of dollars that were taken," says Karen Spayner with Taylor Mill police.

While police work together to build this case and find who stole the vases, Mother of God cemetery superintendent Phil Zumdick has been looking over all the graves in his care and calling families who've been hit by these thefts.

"We don't need this. We just don't need this. This is torture for our families really, is what it is," says Phil.

He wants whoever's grave robbing to stop. So does Helen.

"These people, they have no morals. They definitely don't have any religious background, or they wouldn't be doing this," she says.
