Officials battle bed bugs at local school

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - It's a story no parent wants to hear - bed bugs in a local high school.

Hamilton High School officials say there were two isolated cases of bed bugs reported Monday. Officials say they are doing everything they can to monitor the situation.

In one of the incidents, bed bugs were found on a student's backpack. A school staff person put the backpack in a plastic bag to prevent the spread of bed bugs.

In the second incident, a bed bug was found on a student's body. Officials say that student was sent home.

Pest control has been out to the school several times and faculty and staff have been put on high alert. Some parents and students say bed bugs have become a major problem at the school over the last few weeks.

"My daughter is a cheerleader here, and she is really nervous. She has seen them and have heard other kids tell her that they have seen them. And that is a scary thing," said parent Jeanetta Gleason.

Officials say they don't want to cause a panic with parents, but they are working on a letter to send home, to notify everyone of the situation.
