Fire crews deal with frozen hydrants

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) – Fire hydrants are the bread and butter for fire fighters in any season of the year.

In winter months, crews have to deal with frozen hydrants and pipes, and that means delays in fighting a blaze.

This morning, crews battled a blaze in Dayton, Ky., but five hydrants were frozen, causing them to get a late start.

Cincinnati crews regularly service their hydrants to prevent frozen water sources.

"At least once every three weeks, we test and flush hydrants," said Lt.  Ralph Trump of Cincinnati Fire Engine 23.

But sometimes that's not enough. Just this morning, Engine 23 spent almost an hour unfreezing a hydrant that had recently been serviced.
