City Councilman wants City Council and City Manager to reduce salaries to help 2011 Budget

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -- City Councilman Charlie Winburn is calling on City Council and the City Manager to reduce their salaries and Office budgets to offset the 2011 city budget.

The City of Cincinnati is facing a $60 million dollar budget deficit and has proposed that the reduction of salary and office budget will help offset the deficit.

"Since the Administration is recommending to Council numerous budget cuts that will undoubtedly result in layoffs of city employees in some departments, I think Council Members and the City Manager's office should first take a cut of up to 5% for their salaries, and up to 3% for their office expense budgets, " said Winburn.

This is the councilman's second in a series of ideas to help balance the budget. On Tuesday he proposed a 60 day tax amnesty plan to collect unpaid taxes and other fees. There is nearly 9 million dollars in unpaid parking tickets and 118 million dollars in unpaid funds from earnings and corporate income taxes.

The motion will be filed on Thursday for Council Members and the City Manager to reduce their salaries and office budgets for 2011.

"Council compensation is set by state law at a level of 75% of what is paid to County Commissioners. Currently Cincinnati City Council Members are paid an unusual salary of $60, 645.60 for a part-time job.

"This is just the right ting to do," said Winburn.
