Northern Kentucky Health Department warns citizens about Inspection scam

NORTHERN KENTUCKY (FOX19) -- The Northern Kentucky Health Department is warning food establishments about a individuals posing as a "health inspector" to gain sensitive information.

Restaurants in Kentucky have received telephone calls for someone claiming to be from the health department. The fake inspectors will call the restaurants and asked to set up a time for an inspection. The restaurant is threatened with monetary fines if they do not comply with the request.

The scammers are targeting primarily ethnic-run food establishments and may be trying to take advantage of language barriers as well as cultural values of specific populations.

"Our environmental health inspectors wear official Health Department photo identification," said Steve Devine, Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Division. " We encourage food establishments to ask for proper identification from anyone who states they are a health inspector. Anyone who still has concerns is encouraged to call the Health Department."

The Health Department offers other tips to avoid being scammed:

· Never provide personal or business information by phone unless you are certain of the person with whom you are speaking.

· Environmental health inspectors never contact establishments in advance to schedule routine inspections or to perform inspections resulting from a complaint.

· The Northern Kentucky Health Department follows state policies and procedures for the inspection of food establishments, including proper documentation of all activities. Health inspectors do not call to threaten clients for non-compliance.

· Ask for proper photo identification if you do not recognize an inspector.
