HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - As winter sets in and the temperatures drop down, organizers at food pantries like the New Life Mission in Hamilton say the need is growing by the day.
"I've got apples and groceries," said Hilda Miller of Hamilton.
Miller's groceries will have to get her through the next week to feed her and her daughter.
"And I've come here and eat dinner even, it's real nice," Miller said.
She come to the mission when money is tight for putting food on the table.
"Just when I'm in a tight squeeze, I'll come in and get food," Miller said.
Eligible residents of Hamilton and Fairfield  like Miller come to get a 5 day supply of food once a month, they can also pick up clothes and a hot lunch meal.
"I've never turned anyone away from food," said Vivian Whicker of the New Life Mission.
Whicker's been running the non-profit pantry for more than 20 years and says they've served 28 people since just Thursday afternoon -- more than 400 families have signed up to receive Christmas food baskets, which they'll begin distributing next week. Whicker says the face of needy is a new one every day.
"They only option they have is the food pantry -- more and more people are people that you wouldn't expect to find at a food pantry when they come in they're embarrassed," Whicker said.
