Smoking ban debated in Kenton County

INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19)--- A large crowd turned out at Thursday night's meeting of the Kenton County Fiscal Court to discuss a possible smoking ban for the county.

The court did not take a vote, but listened to the public debate that centered on health vs. property rights.

"This is all about health, not the economy or property rights. As a nurse, a Northern Kentucky resident and a member of Northern Kentucky action, I urge you to pass a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance this month for the well being of the constituents that you serve," one woman testified before the court.

The court is considering a ban that would levy fines and other penalties for businesses that allow smoking in the county.

Opponents say a ban would be hard to enforce for the county. Tara Bainbridge says it would also hurt her bar business, which has a number of patrons who smoke.

"I should have the right to make my own choice. If I was a non smoker and it was an issue that I thought would help my business, I'd be for it. But, it's not going to help. It's going to hurt my business," said Bainbridge, who also testified before the body.

The court will meet again on December 21st and plans to vote then.
