9-year-old Ohio boy accused of stabbing teacher

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A 9-year old boy could face charges after prosecutors say he stabbed his teacher.

The incident happened Thursday at Westbridge School in Cleveland when things got out of control during a Positive Education Program (PEP) on campus.

"I seen a police car in the yard then I pulled over for another one coming down the street and he stopped at the school," said witness Jim Wittenberg.

According to a juvenile prosecutor, the student was calmed down after first going after his teacher with a pair of scissors. Then he used a pen to stab the teacher nine times.

A PEP spokesman said in a statement: "In rare instances when a child attempts to do harm to himself or others, PEP's highly-trained staff members follow PEP's clearly defined protocols to assure the safety of each child and staff member. The safety and well-being of our children and staff members is always our highest priority. "

Malaina Johnson, another PEP student, says violent outbursts aren't uncommon.

"There was this kid in our school who tried to attack our teacher because he missed his bus," she said.

But she is grateful for the help she gets managing her severe emotional problems.

"They're helping me a lot in teaching me how to overcome my anger," she said.

And her grandfather says he feels safe sending her to the day treatment center.

"This could have happened at a Catholic, a Lutheran school, a public school, it could have happened anywhere. Unfortunately it happened with handicapped kids," said Wittenberg.

The teacher's condition has not been released.

As for the student, he may or not be back at the same school, but it is likely he will face some consequences.
