LUDLOW, KY (FOX 19) -- Students at Ludlow Elementary are taking action to help the family of Christina Renaker, a 5th grader at the school.

Karen Lyon, the school's principal says they gathered friends of Christina's Friday morning to explain what happened and help them express their feelings.

"They cried, they hugged one another, they helped each other kind of reason it through and then they started the process of the next step: 'What can we do to help this family?' 'What can we do to help Christina?'" says Lyon.

The girls started by making ''Get Well'' cards to send to Christina at Shriner's Hospital where she remains in fair condition. Lyon says the students are also collecting donations for the family and want to plan a fundraiser with the community sometime next week.

Members of the community say hearing the news is tough but they know the family will be able to get help.

"It's a terrible shame. I know my children probably know a couple of the kids that were involved in the fire and I'm sure they are quite saddened as well and I did notice that the school is providing counselors for them," says Henry Yellman. "The community will get together as a whole and help out the family immensely."
