Drivers prep for snowy roads

HARRISON, OH (FOX19) -- With a messy morning commute looming, drivers are stocking up on supplies like shovels and scrapers to stay ahead of the winter weather.

"Scrap off the ice before I get on the road," said driver Darrin Cliffe.

Stores like Small's Do it Best Hardware in Harrison have been busy since the white stuff started falling.

"They realize the snow is going to be here, and then they come in and get snow shovels and snow melt and then they try to tackle it," said store manager Jerry McClure.

On top of the shovels, scrapers, hand warmers, and space heaters employees say rock salt has been flying off the shelves since they opened --by far their hottest item to prepare for the cold and snow.

"A bag of salt to make sure they can get in and out, specially a lot of businesses for safety reasons," McClure said.

Second on everyone's list is having a shovel on standby.

"I replaced my two shovels this year because they got broke last year with all the ice," Cliffe said.

Store workers are even tracking the path of snow themselves from their office computer, to see what's headed their way, and if they need to stock more supplies for customers.

"People need to make sure that their sidewalks are ice free and snow free, so nobody has accidents," McClure said.
