Local restaurants react to national buffet threat

BETHEL, OH (FOX19) - The back kitchen at From Scratch Restaurant and Catering is always busy as the staff whips up homemade cooking for the front buffet, a bar with selections owner Bonnie Sturgill is proud of.

"You'll find three or four different kinds of entrees, macaroni and cheese, which my own recipe and people come just for that, broccoli casserole they come for, we make a banana pudding that is my own recipe," says Sturgill.

She naturally felt concerned, even angry, as news broke that Al-Queda in the Arabian Peninsula operatives have a plan to target businesses like hers--restaurants and hotels that sell buffets.

"It's just appalling. It's unimaginable," says Bonnie.

In the plan, terrorists would use cyanide or Ricin to poison thousands.

"It's not unlike that 1984 incident where the salmonella was used successfully in a salad bar to food poison hundreds of people," says terror expert Patrick Devlin. "With this particular threat there was no time frame specified."

Thus, Bonnie's making sure her customers are safe.

"If there is any kind of threat or there is any kind of suspicion at all, we will remove the food, and we will remove the customer if we have to," says Bonnie.
