Council goes back to work on the budget

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Cincinnati city leaders are getting back to budget discussions on Tuesday.

City council debated most of last week on the 2011 budget, but couldn't get a deal done by Christmas Eve.

Right now, the biggest sticking points are the layoffs of more than 200 police and firefighters and a $20.50 a month trash fee. Council is working with a $60 million deficit.

Ohio state law states that the budget must be finalized by the end of the year, so council has until Friday to get it done. If they cannot, a temporary budget go into effect Saturday, meaning the layoffs will happen.

The budget committee recessed a meeting on Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon, and is scheduled to meet again at 5 p.m.
