Fire crews on scene of Tennessee ammunition plant explosion

OAKLAND, Tenn. (AP) - Fire crews are on the scene of an explosion at a munitions plant in the western Tennessee town of Oakland.

According to a Fox19 sister station, WMC-TV, one person is trapped after the Kinematics Research plant in Oakland, Tennessee exploded around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Oakland Police Chief Rick Jewell told WMC-TV the extent of the victim's injuries is unknown.  A firefighter was also injured, and transported to a local hospital. At 2:15 p.m., Jewell said munitions inside the plant were continuing to explode.

According to Kinematics Research website, the company manufactures ammunition.

Emergency crews are currently on the scene. So far, there's no word on what caused the blast. Witnesses reported hearing a series of explosions.

Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, said there also was a fire.

A large plume of smoke was billowing from the plant. Oakland is about 30 miles northeast of Memphis.
