FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - The Fairfield City School District has a new superintendent.

The Fairfield Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Paul Otten, currently the district's assistant superintendent, to take over as superintendent on Aug. 1, 2011.

Previous Superintendent Cathy Milligan announced she would retire on July 31, 2011, after four years in the post.

Otten, who's been with the Fairfield Schools for 14 years, has "demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in every assignment he has undertaken," said Milligan. "I know that he will be a wonderful leader for the Fairfield Schools. He has played a major role in the success of our school district and is truly deserving of this promotion."

Otten first came to the district as a fifth-grade teacher at Fairfield Intermediate School. His first administrative assignment was as an assistant principal split between East and North elementary schools. He then served as principal at East and at Fairfield Middle School before becoming assistant superintendent.
