INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) - Police have identified the victim and suspect of a deadly home invasion in Independence.

A couple minutes after midnight Sunday, police were called to Sylvan Drive for a report of a burglary in progress.  When officers arrived they found Alan Hampton, 45, lying in the front yard with several gun shot wounds.

Ricky Colwell, 48, was found inside the home, also suffering with a gunshot wound.

Investigators discovered that Hampton had entered the home through the front door and assaulted the Colwell and his wife with a chair while they were sleeping.

Colwell then pulled out a handgun and shot Hampton several times. Colwell was also shot during the struggle.

Hampton then fled from the home and was found in the front yard. He was pronounced dead a shot time later.

Colwell was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"It's just a sad, sad thing all the way around," said neighbor Stephen Bentley. "I saw the guy's body up there by the bushes, but I didn't know exactly what had happened."

Police say Colwell and Hampton were neighbors. A motive for the incident had not yet been determined.

The home invasion is still under investigation.
