Geothermal well catches fire after crews hit natural gas pocket

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (FOX19) - A geothermal well caught fire around 9:30 this morning in the backyard of a home on Hunters Point Lane.

Anderson Township fire crews were called to the scene after a drilling company accidentally hit a pocket of natural gas. The drilling company hit the natural gas pocket at 140 feet below ground.

The unusual part of the fire is that there are no natural gas lines in the area where the drilling company was digging.

Fire crews kept the fire under control for hours. Crews said that they would just have to wait until it burned out.

No one was hurt in the incident.

According the fire chief, this fire is the first of its kind in Anderson Township since the early 1980s.
