COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) – Megin Gray, 26, woke up Tuesday around 11 a.m. to find her nine month old daughter next to a baseboard heater and badly burned. Gray rushed her daughter to the hospital, but the infant had already died.
Police say Gray had taken Xanax, Percocet with alcohol before going to sleep around 11 p.m. Monday. Gray lived on John Street in Covington, KY with the infant, her three other children, another couple and their child.
"I think she gets what she deserved. That is horrible," says neighbor Leslie Brock. "As a mother you should have just taken a step back from your children an thought OK, if I'm not in that right mindset, then somebody else needs to take my children. I need to at least get myself back together."
Neighbors also tell FOX19 that there are many times that police are called to the apartment complex where this happened.
"Houses, cars, have been broken into. It's just not normal, you know for police to have to come so many times to the same address," says one woman who didn't want to be identified.
Police were called to the St. Elizabeth Covington Emergency Room around 11:30 p.m. Officials say the infant suffered from severe burns from head to toe on the left side of her body. Gray was arrested Tuesday night and charged with second degree criminal abuse. An autopsy is scheduled and Gray's charges could be upgraded, depending on the results.
Gray's preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 26th. She is being held on a $25,000 cash bond in the Kenton County Jail.
