RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – As of January 14, the IRS website is live and ready to accept tax filing electronically. However, we found another way to file taxes, simply with the click of a smart phone.
TurboTax unveiled it's new smart phone application called Snap Tax. It is for filers who use a simple 1040EZ return. A user simply snaps a photo of their W-2 with a smart phone. The "app" automatically enters the users information into a tax return.
The app is free though there is a $15 fee to file the return. That fee covers one Federal 1040EZ and one state tax return, plus e-filing.
Cyber expert, Theresa Payton, weighed in on the system. Her concerns begin after that photo is submitted and it remains in the memory of your cell phone.
"Is your phone password protected? Do you leave the picture on your phone or do you email it to yourself. Do you synch it to your home computer? Is that password protected?," Payton said. She says it's imperative to delete the photo once it's sent or a user opens him or herself up to identity theft.
The Snap Tax is available for both the iPhone and Android, anyone who is eligible to file a 1040EZ will be able to use the app -- to file from start to finish. To learn more about the App you can visit Turbo Tax by clicking here.
