LOVELAND, OH (FOX19) – A man is in the hospital after crashing into a coffee shop early Saturday morning in Symmes Township.

Loveland police told FOX 19 Matthew McCarthy was speeding around 2 a.m. on Loveland Madeira Road. Police attempted to stop him which led to a short police chase. The officer decided to stop the pursuit due to traffic, speed and bad road conditions but McCarthy kept going. He then crashed into the Corner Coffee Cafe in Symmes Township.

During the chase police say McCarthy reached speeds of 80 miles an hour.

McCarthy is charged with operating a vehicle impaired and failure to comply with officers' orders. He is in serious condition at Bethesda North Hospital.

The owners of the Corner Coffee Cafe, Joni and Rick Lawson, say the cafe is temporarily closed but do have insurance to cover the damages. This is the third time an accident like this has happened to the cafe.

"We would love to see a guardrail, they're supposed to be widening the road...right now with no guardrail this is bound to happen again sooner or later," says Joni Lawson.

The owner of the building Nelson Bove says he has approached both Hamilton County and Symmes Township to put a guardrail on the road near his building but nothing has happened.

"For people in Hamilton County they go by statistical methods and so on and they didn't think so, but hopefully this time they'll take another look at it and decide we really do need a guardrail," says Bove.
