CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the signing of RHP Edinson to a 1-year contract through the 2011 season. Volquez was eligible for arbitration for the first time.
"We're glad we could avoid an arbitration hearing," said Jocketty. "We discussed both 1-year and multi-year deals, but both sides agreed this is the best option at this time."
Volquez, 27, was the Reds' 2008 Most Outstanding Pitcher but in August 2009 was bothered by a right elbow injury that required "Tommy John" surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament. He began last season on the disabled list but returned in August to finish 4-3 with a 4.31 ERA in 12 starts for the Reds.
Volquez posted a 1.95 ERA in his last 4 starts of last season. He started Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Philadelphia, a 4-0 loss in which Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter.
