Sheriff investigates crash that killed former fire chief on 71

GALLATIN COUNTY, KY (FOX19) - Gallatin County Sheriff Josh Neale will meet with the Commonwealth Attorney tomorrow to discuss a crash that took the life of a former Edgewood firefighter who was working to clean up previous crash.

The crash happened on southbound 71 in Gallatin County not far past the Boone County line. Neale says 53-year-old Danny Allen died when a box truck driving in the open high-speed lane of Southbound came up upon a slower-moving pickup truck, and went through the cones into the closed low-speed lane, where Allen was working, hitting and killing him. The car also hit two other workers, who were sent to the hospital. They are expected to be alright.

According to our sister station WAVE, Danny Allen was a longtime firefighter and the former Fire Chief of the Edgewood Fire Department in Edgewood, Kentucky. Allen was working for the GRA-KAT cleanup company in Louisville that was called in by a towing company to clean up a tractor-trailer that flipped Wednesday morning.

The driver of the box truck told police his truck swerved when he hit his brakes to avoid hitting the pickup truck. Sheriff Neale says experts are examining that the straight truck.

Neale says he doesn't know if this case will result in charges.
