CLIFTON (FOX19) - Cincinnati City Council member Wendell Young met with Ohio Governor Kasich to introduce a resolution of support to re-open the Keller's IGA in Clifton.
The resolution asked the Governor and Tax Commissioner to arrange a payment plan with Keller's IGA that would allow the store to pay taxes it owes and to re-open as soon as possible. The Governor heard the proposed resolution and is taking it under advisement.
This repayment plan would allow the store to open and have 50 employees working again.
Keller's IGA is a family-owned grocery store that began in the early 1900's near Findlay Market and moved to Clifton in 1939. The business took on the IGA name in the 1950's and has undergone three expansions since then.
In a statement released by Friends of Keller's, it says Keller's had to choose between keeping inventory full in order to keep their customers, and paying the sales taxes. They say Keller's fell behind on making sales tax payments to the state. They say "although payment arrangements and thousands of dollars of payments had been made, on January 6, 2011 the Ohio Department of Taxation demanded that all tax be paid in full. Because Keller's was not able to do that, the Ohio Department of Taxation suspended the vendor's license and closed the store."
