Lewis says Bengals are moving on with or without Palmer

(FOX 19)

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis told FOX19 and a small group of local media today that he talked with his quarterback, Carson Palmer recently, but wouldn't reveal what was said. When asked if his quarterback for the 2011 season is currently on his roster, Lewis said "I don't know that. All I know is what's been said. You just have to take it from what we know. That's the way I'm proceeding."

Lewis also said that the situation with Palmer would not influence who they draft. But the Bengals coach did say that he was meeting with Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton today. Lewis, and members of his staff, will spend 15 minutes interviewing the Auburn quarterback as part of the normal combine process.

When asked why the club didn't assign a franchise tag to running back Cedric Benson or cornerback Johnathan Joseph, Lewis said the numbers just didn't work out. But he did say talks were continuing with both players. Benson and Joseph are unrestriced free agents.
