Atlantic City, N.J. ---- Joe Sunderman, the long-time popular radio play-by-play voice of Xavier basketball, has been named the recipient of the 2011 Bob Vetrone Media Award. The annual award goes to a member of the media or a staff person at an Atlantic 10 institution "whose service, professionalism and commitment have made a lasting contribution to the student-athletes and institutions of the Atlantic 10 Conference."
Sunderman will be honored at halftime of Xavier's A-10 Quarterfinal game against Dayton on Friday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
Sunderman, 1979 Xavier University graduate and a member of the Xavier University Athletic Hall of Fame, is in his 30th year as a member of the Xavier Radio broadcast team. Sunderman is considered a high level professional at his craft and has had opportunities to move into broadcasting professional sports but has decided to stay with his first love, college basketball. Sunderman is positive in his coverage of Xavier and the Atlantic 10 and his upbeat, positive and outgoing personality make him popular with media and fans alike all over the league.
The late former XU head coach Skip Prosser once introduced Joe at a banquet: "He is the only man I know that I have never heard speak negatively about someone else. He is the most positive person I know."
