UNION TWP, OH (FOX19)  -  Hundreds braved the terrible weather to honor a local soldier.

Anthony "Tony" Castelluccio, 20, died last weekend in Georgia. He was killed in a car crash. Castelluccio had just finished basic training at Fort Knox.

Castelluccio graduated from Glen Este High School in 2009. On Thursday night, his family, friends, coaches, teammates and strangers all packed the high school football field in Union Township to honor him.

Tony was a star athlete at Glen Este. Students sang songs to try to lift heavy hearts.

Tony's mother, Donna, said her son didn't know a stranger; he was a friend to everyone. Thursday night, that was clear. More than 200 people stood in the cold to remember Castelluccio.

Loved ones shared stories of their time with Castelluccio. Candles were then handed out to everyone in the crowd. Minutes later, everyone walked the track around the football field that Castelluccio loved to play on. Then Rozzi's Fireworks organized a 21-gun fireworks salute.

Funeral plans are pending.
