Baby sitter accused of intentionally scalding girl

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Police in Martinsville have arrested a baby sitter who they say intentionally scalded a 2-year-old girl's hand.

Thirty-year-old Cheryl Maxwell was being held in the Morgan County Jail on Saturday on more than $10,000 bond. She was arrested Friday on charges of child neglect and false informing.

Authorities say Maxwell burned the child, Mackenzie Doster, inside her home on Oct. 29. Maxwell told investigators that the child suffered the third degree burns by accident when she placed her hand under the hot faucet as Maxwell was running her bath water. But a probable cause affidavit said the burn pattern showed the child's hand had been immersed in scalding hot water.

WTHR-TV reports the child is recovering after two surgeries, but doctors say she'll have permanent problems with the hand.
