AKRON, OH (WOIO) - It's Day #3 in the corruption trial of former Judge Bridget McCafferty.
Former Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo testified against the judge on Tuesday. He admitted he has been cooperating with federal investigators since November 12th.
Russo said he was a horrible person while in political office, and said he had trouble looking at himself in the mirror. He said he is no longer ashamed because he is helping the federal investigation.
Russo said he would call McCafferty 2-4 times a year, and ask her to watch out for certain cases involving friends, employees and others close to him.
He added he expected McCafferty to help because they are friends.
McCafferty faces one federal charge of making five false statements to law enforcement. The statements were regarding conversations with Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora and Russo.
On Monday, an FBI agent was on the stand and talked about the 8-months of wire-tapping that went on during the investigation.
A total of 44,000 phone calls were screened. And while no calls between Dimora and McCafferty were recorded, there was a phone call between McCafferty and Steve Pumper.
Pumper is the former head of DAS Construction, and he has already pleaded guilty to corruption-related charges.
Russo pleaded guilty to 21 charges in September, and was sentenced to serve a nearly 22-year starting in May. He hopes the government will reduce his lengthy sentence now that he is cooperating, but has gotten no promises.
