BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Authorities in Butler County have confirmed that a man accused of a brutal rape and kidnapping in 2005 has been apprehended in Mexico City.
Alfredo Lopez Cruz is wanted for the brutal kidnapping and rape of a 9-year-old Hamilton girl in 2005. The Sheriff's Office Fugitive division has been working with the Butler County Prosecutor's Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, the City of Hamilton Police Department, and Department of Justice, in an effort to capture Cruz since the original warrant was issued. Investigators believed that Cruz has fled the United States back to Mexico.
Authorities were waiting on a positive identification on Cruz's fingerprints before they would say 100 percent that he was arrested. They received confirmation on Wednesday.
A provisional arrest warrant was issued in February and a copy was forwarded to Mexican authorities. A target location for Cruz in Mexico was identified last week and on March 18, Cruz was taken into custody without incident by the Federales. He is currently being held without bond in Mexico City, pending positive identification, and extradition back to the United States.
"Our job was to find this dude and we found him, we're almost certain," said Jones.
In 2005, at the time of the rape, an angry mob burned down Cruz's house.
Cruz, who was in the country illegally at the time of the offense, is currently charged with one count of kidnapping and four counts of rape. Once the lengthy extradition process is complete, Cruz will be transported to Butler County Jail, incarcerated, and will be awaiting trial.
