DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - A judge has sentenced an Ohio doctor convicted of trying to hire someone to kill his ex-wife to seven years in prison.
Dr. Shafik Ahmad was sentenced Wednesday in Dayton. Ahmad was convicted in January of one count of conspiracy to commit murder.
Authorities say Ahmad of Huber Heights tried to pay an ex-patient $2,000 in 2009 to find someone to kill his former wife, Kristin Hornsby of Batavia. The slaying never occurred.
The Dayton Daily News reported that Hornsby testified she and Ahmad were involved in a custody dispute over their son. Ahmad's attorney had argued that Ahmad wanted Hornsby discredited, not killed, and the $2,000 was to buy marijuana and have it planted in her car.
Attorney Jon Paul Rion said Wednesday that Ahmad will appeal the conviction.
