RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Nearly everyone can take advantage of this deal. This Saturday, Midas will give you a free oil change when you donate a pint of blood. Midas owner Mark Smith started the exchange after 9/11. Virginia Blood Services says it's one of the biggest drives of the year.
"We usually see between 300 to 500 donors depending on the time of the year. He starts in January and goes all the way through December," said Marly Fausz with Virginia Blood Services.
Virginia Blood Services will screen the donors. After answering a series of questions, you can give blood and pick up your certificate for a free oil change.
"Now we do 5 drives a year at three of our locations," said Mark Smith.
Midas offers an additional perk for each drive you attend. Along with a free oil change, you can get free wiper blades, a state inspection and a tire rotation.
"You can give 5 times a year and our ideal goal is to get you come in and give five times a year," Smith said.
All 21 hospitals that receive this blood are critically low on O Positive and are in desperate need of your donation.
"What that means is surgeries stop," he said.
Virginia blood services needs 400 units of blood every day in order to meet the need of the hospitals it serves in central Virginia.
"One donation can save up to 3 lives, so you're really getting a bigger bang for your donation," Fausz said.
You have to be at least 16-years-old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds.
"It's an easy thing to do. It takes 20 minutes of your time. If you plan it right, you'll never pay for another oil change," Smith said.
Virginia Blood Service mobile vans will be at three Midas locations this Saturday -- Short Pump, Hull Street and Colonial Heights. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and walk-ins are absolutely welcome.
